Before the television cameras, before twenty million viewers tuned in each week to Life Is Worth Living, Fulton J. Sheen was a philosopher. Trained at the Catholic University of Louvain under the intellectual legacy of Cardinal Mercier, and the first American to receive the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosophy, Sheen brought the full rigour of the neo-scholastic tradition to bear upon the moral questions of his age. The Moral Universe (1936) is the pivotal work in Sheen's extraordinary career — the hinge between the academy and the pulpit. In fifteen chapters surveying the Christian moral vision from the Incarnation to the last things, from conscience and the interior faculties to matrimony, vocation, and final judgement, Sheen accomplished what few have managed before or since: to render the depth of Thomistic philosophy and patristic wisdom in prose that is at once intellectually serious and luminously accessible. Threading together the thought of Aquinas and Augustine, the devotional intensity of Newman, the poetry of Thompson and Chesterton, and the moral witness of Scripture, the result is a single volume that maps the entire drama of salvation with the instincts of a preacher and the precision of a scholar. This new critical edition, edited and introduced by William Anselm, presents Sheen's text to a new generation of readers for the first time with a scholarly apparatus. The editor's introduction situates The Moral Universe within the neo-scholastic revival and Sheen's intellectual formation at Louvain. Sixty-five annotated notes identify, for the first time, the principal sources, quotations, and literary allusions that Sheen left unattributed — from Shakespeare and Milton to the Breviarium Romanum — together with endnotes and an expanded bibliography. A landmark of Catholic thought, restored and illuminated for the twenty-first century.
